Cigar Bars To The Rescue

When, in the early 1990s, the premium cigar industry rebounded after years of stale sales figures and slackening consumer interest, it faced a new social climate. More and more municipalities and states had passed anti-smoking legislation throughout the eighties, and this trend only continued through the 1990s and beyond. All of which meant that many of those new smokers found themselves unable to enjoy their new hobby over a fancy restaurant meal, at the movies, at some bars, or sometimes (as in the case of the new, ultra-restrictive British smoking laws) anywhere outdoors at all.

Thankfully for smokers, cigar bars sprung up throughout the country as a way to offer smokers the chance to enjoy the rich taste of their smoke in the company of folks with similar interests. Many of the new anti-smoking laws make exceptions for establishments that cater directly to smokers – though, often, in these cases, the smoke-permitting establishments must also install air-filtration systems and various other gadgets that ensure maximum air purity (for those inside) and minimum leakage (for the non-smokers outside). Thus, cigar bars represent an important site for the new generation of smokers. Often, they’re the only place in town where a person’s love of stogies can be shared in a like-minded, social atmosphere. So it’s no wonder that cigar bars, like stogie specialty shops, clubs, and even, magazines, became an important part of the new cigar culture that blossomed during the 1990s.

The range of amenities offered varies with the bar. Some high-end bars offer for-rent humidor-lockers – such as Club Macanudo in New York – or books for sale, such as the two Bar and Books stores in New York City (at Hudson and at Lexington). At Azucar Cigar Lounge in Corona, California, you find plasma television sets and walk-in humidors. Many bars double as, in effect, high-end sports bars; they’re classy places in which to sit in leather furniture while watching the Knicks game.

Other cigar bars offer the same amenities and entertainment options as other kinds of bars. Burbank Bar and Grill in Burbank, California – the same “beautiful downtown Burbank” from which so many ’60s television shows broadcasted – has its own band, and another stogie bar in Glendale, California, has free appetizers. At Fumare (the Spanish word for “to smoke”) in Reno, Nevada, patrons play poker, browse books, and watch sports on the flat-screen TV. And Shelly’s Back Room, in Washington, D.C., with its location close to the heart of the nation’s governmental processes, offers a chance to eavesdrop on the corridors of power.

Other bars are actually cigar stores with substantial added-in lounges – similar to coffee-roasting foundries where coffee is also served, or breweries that offer excellent bars. For example, at The Tobacco Shop in Hartford, Connecticut, you find some hard-to-find smoke and pipe products. Signature Cigars in Rockville, Maryland, offers free coffee to smoking customers.

These establishments are traditionally male-dominated, according to stereotypes, but as with many once-well-established facts about cigar smoking, this one has been subject to some revision in the years since the mid-1990s cigar boom. Premium stogie makers noticed an uptick in the number of female cigar smokers during that period, and stars like Jennifer Garner and Demi Moore trumpeted their love of stogies on the cover of magazines such as Cigar Aficionado. In this new climate, it’s no surprise to find women frequenting cigar bars as well. Photographer Danuta Otfinowski offers, on her website, a photo essay devoted to the women who patronize New York City’s cigar bars. She writes, “Cigars have been a smoky symbol of male power for many years, but the post-feminist 90’s are witnessing the resurgence of the stogie among both men and women.”

With cigars continuing to enjoy steady growth in popularity, and those restrictive anti-smoking laws seemingly not about to go anywhere, the importance of cigar bars will likely continue to grow. But there’s nothing new about that – tobacco has had a social dimension for nearly as long as it’s been smoked. Smoking in ancient tribal societies was, after all, often a social, celebratory activity, and perhaps cigar bars recover some of that ancient camaraderie.

Angelina Jolie Snubs Seacrest and Why He Deserves it

Stars Spotted During the Golden Globes

At this year’s 66th Golden Globe Awards, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie made a stir once again as they walked down the red carpet. Both photographers and fans alike were enthusiastically taking photographs of the beautiful couple as they posed and waved to their ardent onlookers. Angelina and Brad were both nominated for major awards (Best Actress and Best Actor) but those awards were ultimately brought home by Kate Winslet (for her role in Revolutionary Road) and Mickey Rourke (for his role in The Wrestler). The other actresses nominated were Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Kristin Scott Thomas. On the other hand, the other actors nominated for Best Actor were Sean Penn, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Frank Langella.

Some Drama Before the Show Even Started

However, even before the Golden Globe Awards even started, some drama was already brewing on the red carpet. Ryan Seacrest, the annoyingly ingratiating host of such shows as American Idol and his very own radio show, decided to speak in his own defense about the A-list couple snubbing his red carpet interview. Seacrest had tried to get an interview for E! by going up to the couple but they just walked by him and gave him the cold shoulder. Later on he mentioned on his radio show that he thought Angelina must not have thought that he was important and added defensively, I don’t think I’m top of mind for Brad and Angelina. I honestly don’t believe they’d know who I was if I walked over there. To address why Brad and Angelina decided to give an interview to his rival Billy Bush from NBC instead, he just owed it all to the NBC connection. “There’s an NBC deal there. NBC hosted the Globes, and they have a deal to talk to the people who come to the Globes†said Seacrest. Seacrest even added that he had learned something from the experience: “I realized quickly that it’s against the rules to walk down onto the carpet from the platform.”

The Reason Seacrest Deserves Angelina’s Snub

However, Angelina has granted Seacrest an interview before. During the Golden Globes two years ago, which he asked her what she had given her children for breakfast and all she said was cereal. Afterwards, he called her “cold†for her chilly response. The public would later find out that at around the time of that interview, Angelina’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, was dying of ovarian cancer.

Music Producers Don’t Get Enough Credit!

It’s Not Fair!

Let me start off by expressing a pet peeve of mine. I understand that this is my burden though, because it’s something that’s probably not going to change any time soon. I’m not going to name any specific artists, because I don’t want to single anyone out. This is a problem that is rampant amongst all genres of music, so it would be simply mean spirited for me to call out artists who don’t produce their own music. Whether it be rock, rap, country, or whatever, every style of music has an example of this problem.

Taking Credit for Other People’s Work

Of course, the vocal artist is part of the creative process. Just like it’s unfair for an artist to receive all of the credit, it’s would unfair for them to receive none of it as well. Don’t misunderstand me and say that the person on the cover has nothing to do with the magic of the music. I’m not saying that at all. It takes talent to take an instrumental and turn it into a catchy song. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If the song wasn’t even written by the singer, then that’s a whole different story altogether, but I digress.

What the problem here is that the common person attributes almost all of the credit for the creation of a song to the person on the album cover, and that sucks. When you talk to a friend about a song that you like, you usually refer to it as “song title†by “artist’s nameâ€, don’t you? How often do you bother to look in the liner notes and see who produced the song? Now maybe some of you do. I know I do. And I know a lot of people who do as well. But I know a lot more people that simply don’t care.

Beware of Label Nazis!

You may ask “What Does A Music Producer Do?â€. It’s not a simple, cut and dry question. When I use the term, I’m referring to a role that sometimes is filled by two people, a producer and an engineer. Oftentimes, the term “producer†will be used to describe a person who did very little work. Despite the fact that there’s little general consensus about what a producer is supposed to use, I like to refer to the person who created a majority of the instrumental and/or mix to be the producer. Note that a lot of people will refuse to think this way, and will insist that the role I’m referring to is the engineer. To those people, I will simply point out that if you choose to argue about this, you are missing the point. It’s not about getting the labels of the crew absolutely correct. It’s about stepping back and realize that there’s people behind the mixing board that are helping to make the music and aren’t getting the recognition that they deserve.

The Impact of A Good Producer

For artists who work exclusively with one producer, this producer is DIRECTLY responsible for creating their signature sound. And if someone happens to be a fan of that particular sound, then they owe their thanks to that producer for bringing that entertainment into their life. If an artist happens to work with multiple producers, then that is a good indication of whether or not you will like their new music. You can simple research who produced their new album, and if your favorite producer happens to be on the new album, then you are more likely to like it.

The movement to get more recognition for music producers isn’t an impossible goal. If Alfred Hitchcock can bring attention to the role of a movie director, and pave the way for directors such as James Cameron, David Fincher, Darren Aronofsky, and Kevin Smith to have their own fan followings, then there is no reason why music producers can’t have more recognition, and their own fanbases.

What Can You Do?

What I want you, the reader to do, is to grab a few of your favorite albums, and read the liner notes. Observe who produced some of your favorite tracks, and google their names. Chances are good that they have a website, and a list of albums that they have produced. Make a shopping list for some of the other albums that they have produced. Better yet, download the tracks, and spread the word that the reason that you like those songs is because of the producer. Give back to the producer and support their music!

-Trey Baird

Super-producer Stir Crazy has stamped his imprint on the music scene since 2003. His production has helped create career defining hits for artists such as Potluck, D12, Bizzy Bone, Toxsick, Kamal, Tre Pound, SOL, T.O.N.Ez, The Insane Clown Posse and many others. Respected beyond the genres of hip hop and urban music, Stir Crazy, has also been sought by superstars and underground legends whose music needs a new edge.

Born Jesse Elliot in Detroit, Michigan on December 23, 1986, Stir Crazy has had many reincarnations– from a partnership in the label Super Phat Productions, and involved in a super group which consists of Dood Computer (of Doom Fist) and Himself.

Chop Shops smash hit single ‘Heartâ€, and Kamal’s debut cd Certified produced by Stir Crazy, introduced a unique style that defined the new wave of music in the years too come. Hip Hop and R&B with crazy effects held together by complex drum patterns. Death B4 Dishoner a group consisting of Lokey, T.O.N.Ez and Stir Crazy proved Stir Crazy could step out his normal boundaries and do heavy metal and rock production.

Stir Crazy’s sound is unexplainable, and meant to be listened to, not read….

His partnership with fellow producer Tre Pound, has spanned the untouchable label Super Phat Productions, and there trademark sound has spawned numerous imitators in the Detroit area. Still known as the originators of the new wave of Detroit sound when it comes to hip hop and R&B music.

Along the way he built an impressive arsenal of studio equipment, and worked/works at many studios in Detroit where he does most of his production. He regularly travels between his home studio and other studios around the area and other states working on many projects.

Stir Crazy’s genre breaking has changed music today and he takes pride in his success at staying ahead of the game with his experimentation and originality. Hard working and confident, his goal is to always stay ten steps ahead of the competitors while making fans not only hear but ‘feel’ music.

One thing Stir Crazy has on his side, other than incredible talent, is visibility. He has been featured on numerous websites as well as print.. He has been seen on several DVD’s, and he has a role in a film entitled Zombie Prom.. Then there are his numerous other appearances and accomplishments. He was named producer of the year by Juggalo News by voting of fans. The acknowledgment came as a surprise, he received a message that he was going to be featured, and there he was, without having to submit anything about himself. The word is out!

“You can accomplish any dream or goals in life, with hard work and confidence†says the dedicated Stir Crazy. He is a innovator of sound which continues to set new standards, while always expanding his musical palette.

Han-Na Chang - The Swan

Han-Na Chang – The Swan

$8.95

With this recording of cello classics, young Han-Na Chang consolidates her reputation as a performer of remarkable maturity and technical accomplishment. The restrained tone of quiet elegy that she brings to these works is hypnotic, and her ability to find the center of a phrase and highlight it with simple clarity is a gift one would expect to find in a player with a few more years’ experience.
